What is a Sun Outage?
Twice each year, TV customers may experience some degree of television interference due to sun outages. These outages are caused by a phenomenon known as “solar satellite interference.” These brief outages occur when the sun passes directly behind the satellites that transmit television signals for any provider. When the sun is aligned with a transmitting satellite, solar radiation emitted by the sun disrupts the satellite’s signal and causes a brief signal outage.
During the sun outage, viewers may experience loss of signal, pixelated picture, picture freezes, or audio distortions for a brief period of time, as this disrupts our ability to receive and rebroadcast the network affiliated transmissions. Contingency plans and alternate programming will be in place by Master Control to prevent as much disruption as possible.
